In the middle of the 1870s, Henry Le Beau a French gold smith found himself lost in the Black Hills of South Dakota. He fell asleep thinking that he would die of hunger or thirst. During sleep he dreamed of a mountain stream with vines grow on the banks. He in fact awake and started walking, low and behold as in his dream, he came on a torrent of vines grow on the banks. The form of these vines resulted in the design of Black Hills Gold Jewelry.

Henry Le Beau and his pupil s.t. Butler, the first Black Hills Gold company opened in 1878, and later split into two companies that the Black Hills Gold Jewelry Manufacturing Company and the company F.L. Thorpe were. Today, many Black Hills Gold manufacturers in this region.
